He served in the United Kingdom and the Middle East, where he was shot down and made a prisoner of war in Germany. In this book, which he wrote in 1991 at the urging of his family, he describes his early training in Australia, his trip to the UK via the Panama Canal, training in the UK, his Middle Eastern Operations, his two years in German prisoner of war camps, his long march half starved at the end of the war around northern Germany, his liberation by British paratroopers, and repatriation to England and then Australia.

In a disarmingly matter-of-fact way, he describes the horrors endured by POWs and how he survived the final degradation. He died in 2000 at the age of 78.
